BIJAM (Student Awareness Forum) Drug Drop-In Centers in Birgunj, Nepal
With the assistance of Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Martha Mummey,
BIJAM opened the first bus-park
drop-in center in Nepal. BIJAM is staffed by a group of committed, volunteer college-age students and
provides peer-education and outreach to prostitutes, drug-addicts and drug-users, truck-drivers, rickshaw-drivers, and
students. The success of their operations is widespread, and respected - their bus-park drop-in center served as the model
for other project throughout Nepal.

Youth Community Center (YCC)
** Project Completed **
In the first phase of operations YCC was basically the creation of a volunteer Nepali “Americorps” for the youth
and students of the city, and the institutionalization of this as an effective bridge between City Hall and the local community governments.

Rickshaw Micro-Credit Project
The vast majority of rickshaw drivers rent their rickshaw from day-to-day, living hand-to-mouth on each
day’s generated income, while at the same time paying a daily fee to their slum lords for use of the rickshaw. This daily rental fee
prevents them from ever getting ahead. It’s a feudalistic system of human exploitation that has no place in our world today.
Simply put, we’d like to help set them free…
